Moenchsberg (Salzburg)

Moenchsberg is a hill on the south of the old town of Salzburg. I sketched this hill from the north bank of Salzach River 

The old town of Salzburg spreads along the north foot of this hill. Why did they found the city at such an place with little sunshine?
